Number of European top 8 positions in total: 2009: 177 2008: 182 2007: 186 2005: 179 2004: 190 2003: 200 The decline is largely explained by lower representation in running disciplines (sprint, hedge, medium, long distance, but not relay) since these disciplines is a decrease from 2003 to 2009 of 20 top 8 positions (!) - almost evenly divided between men and women disciplines. However, not everything that looks sad for Europeans. In three discipliern was made for "clean sweep" in Berlin: High Jump men, hammer throw and men's Heptathlon women.
